Title: Nexus 4 not booting and Red flashing LED....
Post by: JayJ on January 14, 2013, 08:50:33 AM
I think I'm jinxed.....

I was working nights last night and at around 3:30am I was using my Nexus 4, it had 25-30% battery remaining and the screen went out. I pressed the power button but nothing happened so I tried again this times a little longer but still nothing so after half a dozen attempts I long pressed the power button hoping it would boot but nothing...
I tried to boot holding volume down and power, I tho boot holding both volume up and down and power but still nothing so I plugged my Nexus 4 into the AC adapter, the LED started to blink red??
I tried booting again with the power cable plugged, I tried holding combinations of the buttons whilst plugging in the micro USB but still nothing other than the flashing LED.

Now I was starting to be concerned so I Googled "nexus 4 red flashing LED", I found several posts on different forums suggesting that the battery was critically low but as above it was 25-30% when I picked it up and I received no 15% warning. The consensus was that some had success after leaving the Nexus 4 to charge some considerable time whereas others had received replacements from Google.
I left my Nexus 4 on charge whilst at work, approx 1-1hr 30minutes and still it would not boot. I got home called Google support and it was confirmed it was a battery issue.
The support agent ran through a few procedures to try getting my Nexus 4 to boot but we were unsuccessful.

Now this is what I don't get, my Nexus 4 is less than a month old and I assumed it would be replaced under warranty and that is what Google support told me but I expected it to be done there and then on the phone but I was told she would get the start a replacement procedure, passing this on to another department and asked me to leave the device to charge for next two hours. She also stated I would receive an email, if my Nexus 4 booted normally after the further two charge time to reply to the email and the replacement procedure would be cancelled.
Firstly I was under the impression as above, that warranty claims were handled during the phone call, not later by another department and secondly after a further four hours of charging my Nexus 4 will still not boot and the LED is still blinking red....

I have now replied to said email, stating the whole scenario and that after an extended period of charging my Nexus 4 still will not boot. Waiting for a reply....

Not good news, especially after all the hassle you had getting it. Perhaps you need to mention that as well.

Keep us up to date with how you get on.

Fingers crossed it'll be sorted soon.

Did you root?

I'll let you know how I get on... :'(

Well rooting a device won't cause a hardware problem with the battery, especially if they are aware of known faults already.

Night night :-)

No but technically it voids warranty...

Just waiting for reply from Google support now, oh the pain...

Just received an RMA email from Google, does this mean they're sending a replacement because I have 21 days to return this?

Yeah! Well, maybe you can use your N7 for a substitute while you're waiting on your new N4 :D

Thanks guys...

And yeah I do have my N7 but still this is a load of hassle I could really do without, I'm relegated to an Android phone running Android 2.1 and that's painful enough but this RMA stuff is unreal....

Contact Google, wait for decision and wait for RMA email. Then click link in RMA email to order replacement device which Google then place an authorisation on your credit/debit card for the full price of your device until they receive the faulty device back and have confirmed its nothing you've done to the device. Then you have to return the defective device with the RMA (Returns Merchant Authorisation) document from the email and the returns label that comes with your replacement device....

What a con, I have had to borrow 280 GBP to cover me. Grrr >:(>:(>:(

Finally received my replacement this evening, arrived just before 17:50...

Later than expected but seeing as we're the last part of the route and we have snow, I'm not surprised...

Very happy now, just setting it up. :D

Ah, glad you're back in business Jay!  Will you set it up with a lot of the same apps that you have on your 7??

You put any Nexus 4 specific apps on it?

Do you use a different camera app ?

Pretty much, there are other apps on the 4 that aren't on the 7 and I save space in the 4 by having larger games like Mass Effect and NFS on my 7.
The only have on my 4 is Pitfall.

I use Camera JB+ on my N7 but not N4, I like the N4 camera as it is. I want to experiment with Photosphere more and HDR is nice too.
The only specific N4 app I use is LightFlow, not that it's specific to the N4 but it is a useful N4 app.

What about you?

Pretty much generic apps.

Not sure about the camera app, much prefer the S3 one.

The N4 camera app is fairly intuitive, but want to read up on some of the non-obvious settings.

Can't find out much about using the different settings, especially in the Nexus 4 guide on GP!

The camera app settings? I thought they were all self explanatory and on all phones? The only setting I wasn't sure about was the HDR...

Looking at it again, HDR is probably the one I need to know more about.

My replacement is working okay although I've a couple of moments that has caused my heart to skip a beat...

Firstly after a few days I had left the eBay app open and turned the screen off, picked the N4 up to use and pressed the power button but the screen didn't come on and the LED flashed red....thankfully with the next press the screen did come on.

Couple weeks ago the N4 was getting low on battery and after the red flash of death as bassonemexie puts it I am reluctant to fully discharge the battery so put it on charge at about 11% and put the phone down, a few minutes later I picked it up to check on a notification and the phones read 100% charged??? I unplugged the OEM cable and rebooted to find the phone with approx 12% battery??? Weird...

Been fine for the last couple weeks...

No, not at all. The payment was cancelled by Google after 7 days, before they had even received the original Nexus 4 back.

All good.

EDIT: Am sorry to hear your having problems though mate.
