Hey you! Yes you, show me some nice mods
« on: May 24, 2013, 09:23:20 AM »
Hey there guys ( sorry if you get offended by my title but I need it badly. ) it's me Yoshi and I'm here to ask you guys a question ( the root and mod bug bit me ) but can you guys recommend some nice mods for the stock but rooted ROM. I already flashed a new kernel ( faux123 Turbo Boost BOOM SHAKA LAKA! ) so I need to pair it with a nice MOD, however I don't like some ROM cuz' some are very messed up and buggy even the milestones or stable releases. Also the fact that I need to install GApps separate from the ROM is weird for me too, cuz' some are NOT official Google Apps so yeah, no ROM love here. I also want it to be doable or undo able. I use TWRP too. Thanks for reading guys, forgive me for the LOOOOOOONG post ( from my prospective as an eleven year old boy ) and also forgive the amount of requests here. I really want to optimize my N4 cuz' I'm really getting envy of that OCTA core S4 but still, OTA updates from Google wins here ( there are NO Google Edition S4s in my region at launch so....yeah ). Again thanks and happy ROOTING

Firstly let's clear something up, flashing a custom kernel is a step above flashing a custom ROM. People usually start with ROM's and work their way up to kernels...

Secondly, the reason Gapps is separate is because of Google! CyanogenMod use to include Gapps but because Gapps or Google apps are owned by Google, CyanogenMod received a Cease and Desist from Goggle's lawyers.

Android is open source but Gapps are not.

Since that time most reputable Android developers do not include Gapps on a custom ROM, instead providing a Gapps zip to flash Google apps directly onto their custom ROM.

Boot to recovery> Factory data reset> Format System> flash ROM> flash Gapps> Wipe cache> Wipe Dalvik cache> Reboot...

Some ROM developers don't buy into the whole Google sync thing so provide modded Google applications that do not sync but mostly, Gapp packages are the same Gapps you find on the Play store. As an alternative you could you could remove the Google user app's except for the Play store and then install the user apps like Gmail, Calendar et cetera from the Play store. Be warned though, some applications included in the Gapps zip are integral to the Google Play store working like Google Framework services etc.

Did you try Paranoid Android?

PA is getting allot of love from the community atm. They're real innovators and with PIE, Hybrid engine and Halo coming out of beta this custom OS is really challenging the more well know and established custom ROM's like CyanogenMod.
They're a highly rated development team, lead developer "themolesarecoming" has truly brought some great ideas to the community with developers vying to port the teams work into their own custom ROM's.

Seriously worth checking out.

The older Android browser is modded and included because allot of folk don't like Chrome, CM has always had it's own Music application...

Any applications you don't line you can simply uninstall with Titanium Backup or delete the apk from the /system/app folder with a root file explorer and install Chrome and Play music from the Google Play store.

But hey, if custom ROM's aren't your thing... that's cool... I just think people should be educated on the Android ROM scene and that's what I've done.

The Play store in the Gapps zip isn't the only thing needed to access the store...

Hi there guys, sorry for acting  like a NOOB lately but here's GREAT news. I have successfully flash ThinkingBridge ROM with PIE and I also have flash Faux123 Turbo Boost Kernel. I had the people at XDA help me because I think that I was making other people here spend too much time on my problems but, it's okay now and I'M not saying that you guys are not great at helping but you're still great guys, especially Jay and all the other people who replied. Thanks guys for explaining all of things about root this summer. We will start class now in the Philippines at June 10 so thanks again and Goodbye. See ya on October...
