LG WCP-300 Wireless Charger
« on: April 11, 2013, 04:46:00 PM »
Got my LG WCP-300 Wireless charger a few days ago. It's not the official Nexus 4 orb thingy (WCP-700) but it is an official LG product and the worlds smallest Qi wireless charger.
It's only the charging pad, no AC adapter or USB cable and probably a good job because I ordered this from Korea.
It's actually a little more expensive than the official wireless charger but as Google haven't released the official wireless charger here in the UK and the ones that have made it to the UK or being sold from the US on eBay are reaching twice the Google Play price so this wasn't too bad in retrospect.
It's $70 USD which is around 45 GBP, as I mentioned it doesn't come with the AC adapter or USB cable but any 1.8A (1800mA) AC adapter works and I'm currently borrowing my 2A Nexus 7 adapter and Nexus 4 USB cable but I'm looking for a cheap alternative.

The wireless charger charges the Nexus 4 at 1A and takes approximately 4 hrs to charge the device from 0% to 100%. As with other quality Qi chargers, the WCP-300 charges the Nexus 4 to 100% and the stops until the device drops to 96%, it then resumes charging and does this continuously.
The charger comes in black or white, I chose the black. It's diameter is 69.8mm, it stands just 11.9mm and weighs only 62 grams.
There is an LED on the front of the charger which shines orange or amber when connected to the mains and flashes green when a device is being charged.

As with Qi charging in general, it is known to cause the device charging to get warm. This is normal and personally I've had no issues charging my Nexus 4 overnight, my Qi charger is on my bedside unit and my Nexus 4 typically sits on it for between 5-7hrs.

The pictures below aren't great but I'll try to get some better ones done and with the Nexus 4 on the charger.

I'm very happy with this little Qi wireless charger, it was a little expensive but I wanted something a little better than the cheap China Qi chargers on eBay and I think the money was well worth it for the convenience of charging my Nexus 4 just by placing it down when I go to bed. In fact I'm so impressed, I just may buy another for work.

The Orb has got mixed reviews, some say it works perfectly while others have nothing but problems with it. IDK maybe there are some faulty Orbs out there because how for some it works great whilst others it's an epic failure is very odd, there has to be something going on??

I don't think its faulty I think it'd just the way its designed. They should have made it flat or used magnets. It also way too light. O think the people who post good reviews haven't had it for long or they've never had other wireless chargers. I don't even use mine anymore.

I don't know, I've spoken to people on Google+ that have had their Orb since release and have no problems with it...
Then I've spoken to others on Google+ that have nothing but problems with it, mainly their Nexus 4 slipping off the Orb...

IDK, something isn't right but I don't think anybody would disagree that it should be weighted.

I think the WCP-300 is definitely the right choice and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a Wireless charging solution, yes it is slightly more expensive than the Orb and doesn't come atm with a power supply but it simple and effective.
There are, I think two variants of the WCP-300 being released, the one I have without a power supply and one with. The fact it's not available in the UK or the US atm also adds to the higher cost and I think once it gets more wide spread the price will come down. I may wait a little while before getting another and there are also a couple others by other companies coming out in the near future that are worth keeping an eye open for but for now, if anybody wants Wireless charging, I think the WCP-300 is a better bet than the WCP-700.

Just to update for US Nexus 4 owners, this Qi wireless charger is now available from Verizon for $39 USD with USB Cable and AC adapter. $20 cheaper than the official orb and better IMO.
